Oral Cancer occurs most commonly on the “floor” of the mouth (under the tongue), along the inside of the cheeks or lips, along the gum line, or the palate or “roof” of the mouth. Though oral cancer is not as common as other forms of cancer, approximately 40,000 Americans are diagnosed with oral cancer every year. Since oral cancer can be life-threatening, increased awareness and early detection can save lives. Typically, patients find oral cancer in the late stages and there is a 50% survival rate. Head and neck cancers caught early have an 80 to 90% survival rate, so general health practitioners and dental professionals focus awareness efforts during this month for the benefit of those who may be affected by the disease. Our office supports the cause of Oral Cancer Awareness, and we strive to educate our patients on their own risks for developing oral cancer. Minimize your chances with a healthy lifestyle!
