Who Is Most At-Risk for Developing Oral Cancer?

Posted .

Typically, men older than 50 are diagnosed most often with oral cancer, and it is more commonly diagnosed in men than women.   One of the main causes of oral cancer is the use of chewing tobacco, an unhealthy habit more common among men than women. Exposure to the sun can cause cancer on lips that may not have been protected. The use of alcohol also contributes to the causes of oral cancer, as alcohol intake can have an adverse effect on one’s immune system. This decrease in the body’s defense may allow the growth of oral cancer. We encourage our patients to stop habits that may increase the chances of developing oral cancer. If you need assistance in stopping smoking, or the use of chewing tobacco, we have support information for you.
